TIP OF THE MONTH-

Exercise in cold weather

For those of you who are getting tired of the gym workouts and feel the need to fill your lungs with the cold, crisp winter air, here are some tips to keep you fit and healthy in 2012!

1. Dress in Layers-

You’ve heard it before, and you’ll hear it again:  dress in layers.  Our bodies generate a significant amount of heat as a byproduct of physically demanding activity.  Remove layers to maintain a comfortable temperature.  Avoid removing too many layers at once, as exposure of sweat-moistened skin to subzero temperatures can put you at risk for frost bite.  Dressing in layers also gives you the ability to add on a layer if you get colder, or the temperature drops.

2. Be mindful of your hands, feet and ears-

In cold weather, our body redirects blood flow to keep our core temperature up, often at the cost of blood flow to distal areas of our bodies-namely our hands, feet, and ears.  Be sure to wear gloves or mittens, warm socks, and ear muffs or a hat.

3. Drink plenty of water-

Even though you may not feel as thirsty as in warm weather, we still sweat and require replenishing liquids in our body during exercise.  Avoid drinking very cold water, and opt for tepid or even warm water before you work out to keep up a good core temperature.

4. Darkness-

Since we have less daylight hours, chances are you may be out during periods of less light, making your visibility lower.  Be sure to wear reflective clothing, or even consider the use of a headlamp so that you can be sure everyone knows you are out there.  If there is snow or ice on the ground this becomes even more important, as drivers will require more time to give you the space you need.

5. Be safe-

If you have a heart condition, asthma or a health condition that may be adversely affected by the cold, contact your physician about his or her recommendations.  If you are exercising alone, be sure to bring a cell phone and tell someone where you are going and when you plan on returning.

Don’t let the cold weather keep you from fitness, just be sure to take some extra steps to make sure you can keep getting out there!
